Common Types of Spiders Found in Idaho

Idaho is home to a variety of spider species, most of which are harmless and play an important role in controlling other pest populations. While nearly all spiders possess venom to subdue their prey, very few species pose a significant risk to humans. In Idaho, the black widow is the spider of greatest concern due to its medically significant bite. Other common spiders, such as hobo spiders, wolf spiders, and yellow sac spiders, may occasionally bite when disturbed but are generally not considered dangerous.

Below is more information about the most common spiders found throughout the Treasure Valley and surrounding Idaho communities:

  • Black Widow Spiders are the most medically significant spider found in Idaho. Recognizable by their shiny black bodies and red hourglass marking, they prefer dark, undisturbed areas such as garages, sheds, crawl spaces, and woodpiles. While they are not aggressive, they may bite if disturbed or threatened.

  • Yellow Sac Spiders are small, pale-yellow spiders commonly found indoors around walls, ceilings, and corners. Unlike many spiders, they actively hunt their prey rather than relying on webs. Their bites can be painful and may cause localized irritation, but serious reactions are uncommon.

  • Wolf Spiders are large, fast-moving spiders often found in basements, garages, gardens, and around foundations. They do not spin webs to catch prey and instead hunt insects on foot. Although their size can be intimidating, wolf spiders are generally harmless to humans and help control other pest populations.

  • Giant House Spiders are among the largest spiders homeowners encounter in Idaho. They are commonly found in basements, crawl spaces, garages, and other dark areas. Despite their appearance, they are not aggressive and typically avoid human interaction whenever possible.

  • Hobo Spiders are brown spiders with distinctive chevron-shaped markings on their abdomens. They are commonly found outdoors in woodpiles, landscaping, and low vegetation but may enter homes in search of shelter. Current research indicates that hobo spiders are not considered medically significant to humans.

  • Cross Orb Weavers are easily identified by the cross-shaped markings on their abdomens and the large circular webs they build. These spiders are commonly found in gardens, around decks, and near outdoor lighting. They are harmless to people and play an important role in controlling flying insects.

  • Jumping Spiders are small, active hunters known for their excellent vision and ability to leap several times their body length. They are often found on walls, windowsills, and around gardens. These curious spiders are harmless to humans and are considered beneficial because they feed on a variety of common pests.

Spider Control FAQs

If you suspect a spider infestation, look for signs such as webs in corners, dark and secluded areas, or the presence of spiders themselves. Common areas where spiders like to hide include basements, garages, and crawl spaces. You may also notice egg sacs, which can indicate a breeding population.

While Idaho is home to various spider species, most are not dangerous to humans. The black widow and yellow sac spiders are the most concerning due to their venomous bites. However, bites from these spiders are rare and typically occur only when they feel threatened. It's important to educate yourself about the types of spiders in your area and to seek professional spider removal services if you encounter potentially harmful species in your home.

If you suspect you have been bitten by a spider, it’s crucial to monitor the bite for any signs of severe reaction, such as increased pain, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Clean the bite area with soap and water, and apply a cool compress to reduce swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help alleviate discomfort. If you experience severe symptoms or if the bite is from a known venomous spider, seek medical attention immediately.

Choosing professional spider removal services ensures that you receive effective and safe treatment for spider infestations. Professionals have the knowledge and tools to identify spider species and their nesting sites, allowing for targeted removal strategies. Additionally, they can provide preventative measures that may help keep your home spider-free in the future.

What Causes Spider Infestations?

If you have seen an unsettling number of spiders in your home or commercial location, you may wonder why these insects have chosen your building. Many things can attract spiders and potentially lead to an infestation.

These include the following:

  • The presence of other insects: Spiders are predatory and feed on other insects. If your property has flies, mosquitoes, ants, or other insects, spiders may be more likely to seek out these food sources.

  • Clutter and untidiness: Areas with debris, old boxes, or unused items make for great spider hiding and nesting spots. Keeping your property clutter-free can prevent spiders from invading.

  • Vegetation and landscaping: Grasses, bushes, and trees provide shelter and hunting grounds for spiders. Having these things near your building could increase the presence of spiders.

  • Lighting: Bright exterior lights attract insects that may be spider prey. Using less attractive lighting options or placing lights away from your building’s entry points can mitigate issues with spiders.

  • Cracks, gaps, and other entryways: Small cracks, gaps, or openings in walls, windows, doors, and foundations are entry points for spiders seeking shelter. Sealing these things can keep spiders out of your building.
